St. Thomas is the island of Charlotte Amalie, the main port of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Buck Island off its south coast is a national wildlife refuge; green turtles grazing the seagrass at Turtle Cove and a nearby wreck are the snorkel spots. From Red Hook on the east end boats cross to St. John, most of which is Virgin Islands National Park, where park moorings are used in the bays. Christmas Cove on Great St. James is a sheltered snorkel cove. Hurricane season runs June to November; December to April is the busiest period.
