Overview
Prek Toal is a core area of the Tonlé Sap Biosphere Reserve and holds large waterbird colonies on the lake. A private boat crosses from Chong Kneas to the north-west shore of the lake (about an hour), and a sanctuary ranger is picked up at the environment station in Prek Toal floating village. From there a smaller boat enters the flooded forest, and observation towers overlook colonies of spot-billed pelicans, painted storks, greater adjutants and cormorants. Bird numbers are highest in the dry season, roughly December to April. It is a full day with an early start.
