Alappuzha (Alleppey) about

Alappuzha is the busiest gateway to Kerala's backwater network; the product is a lake and canal trip, not a sea trip. Boats run from Punnamada Lake onto Vembanad Lake and into the canals between the below-sea-level paddy fields of Kuttanad. The best-known product is a day or overnight cruise on a houseboat converted from a traditional kettuvallam; the whole boat is hired and meals are cooked on board. The state Water Transport Department (SWTD) runs a shared, low-cost sightseeing boat on the same waters. The Nehru Trophy snake boat race is held on Punnamada Lake in August.
