Overview
A guided boat trip to Giresun Island, known in antiquity as Aretias and the only island in the eastern Black Sea, lying about 1.6 km offshore. Boats depart from the fishing harbour in the city centre, and the whole programme takes around two hours. On the island visitors walk among medieval wall remains, the ruins of a monastery and chapel, a cistern, storage jars and graves, while guides relate the legends of the Amazons and the Golden Fleece. The island is a breeding ground for cormorants and gulls. Trips run several times a day when the weather allows, and the season lasts until October.
