Giresun about
Boat tours in Giresun head for Giresun Island, about 1.6 km offshore and the only island in the eastern Black Sea. Boats leave from the fishing harbour in the city centre, and the whole programme takes about two hours. On the island you can see Byzantine-era wall remains, the ruins of a monastery and chapel, storage jars and graves, while guides recount the legends linked to the island. It is a nesting ground for cormorants and gulls, and 71 plant species have been recorded there. Trips run several times a day when the weather allows, and the season lasts until October. The castle hill above the city is also seen from the sea along the way.
