Van about
Boat trips in Van centre on Akdamar Island, reached in about 20-25 minutes by boats leaving the Gevaş pier on the southern shore of Lake Van. The island's Church of the Holy Cross was built between 915 and 921 for King Gagik of Vaspurakan and is known for the reliefs on its outer walls. After visiting the church you can climb to the island's high point for views over the lake. The almond trees on the island blossom in April. The ticket office is open 08:30–17:00; as there is no accommodation on the island, plan your return boat before the site closes. Çarpanak Island, also on Lake Van, is closed to tourism for conservation.
